Chapter 19
WITHOUT HER ESCORT, Leshi would have been lost in the busy, tree-lined streets of Denesa. As it was, she was too busy trying to look at everything around her to pay attention to where the men were taking her. The boat from Averi Island to Mokayadora had stopped here, but there hadnât been time for Leshi to come ashore. Now, despite the lingering sadness from saying goodbye to Esavas, she was eager to see this new place.
The buildings here were unlike any she had seen anywhere else, coated in a layer of what looked like dried mud and painted in all kinds of soft, beautiful colors â pink, blue, turquoise, green, pale yellow, golden-rose, violet. Small baskets made of elaborately-worked metal sat below the windows, holding pots of flowering plants that spilled down the walls of the buildings. Leshi decided it was the most beautiful city she had seen so far, even more beautiful than Ordivayos, the great capital city. A fitting place to start her new life as a mage.
A life that wouldnât have Esavas in it. But she had known that when she decided to come here, so she might as well stop moping about it and move on.
The four men took her to a broad, quiet street in a less-crowded part of the city, to a grand three-floor building painted creamy yellow, with large doors made of golden-red wood. âThe local offices of the Assembly of Mages,â Kaddast Kalentias explained to her. âThis is where you will be registered.â
Leshiâs stomach fluttered and her palms grew damp as they approached the entrance to the building. Kaddast Kalentias had assured her that getting registered was just a matter of answering a few questions and some testing, but Esavas had made it sound much more involved and intrusive. Not knowing what to expect was almost worse than the rumors she had heard all her life about what happened to people who were taken by the mages.
Inside, the building was cool and shady after the hot, sunny day. In the large room just inside the front doors, a woman in a deep blue sayata was sitting at a raised table on a tall stool. She looked up as the group came in, and gracefully stood down from the stool to bow deeply. Her sayata was heavily embroidered with black beads and trimmed with black lace, and her long black curls were perfectly arranged to flow over one shoulder, with a bright red flower tucked into her hair above the opposite ear. Her lips gleamed red and her eyes and eyebrows were lined in black.
Leshi stared. Why would such a fine lady be working in an office instead of sitting on silk cushions, drinking tea and eating sweets and embroidering marvelous flowers, or whatever else mage ladies did?
âGentlemen. How may I assist you today?â the woman asked.
âGood day, Madam.â Kaddast Kalentias bowed slightly. âThis young lady needs to be registered. We would be delighted if you would take care of the matter.
